Autobiography
Aleksandr Andreichuk is a Tanzania-based researcher of Russian origin. After graduating from the State University of Management (Moscow) in 2011, Aleksandr immigrated to East Africa and later to Tanzania in 2012, where he founded Altezza Travel, an adventure travel company.
From his first days in Tanzania, Aleksandr developed a keen interest in conservation, focusing particularly on the flora and fauna of Tanzania and Mount Kilimanjaro. Through Altezza Travel’s sponsorships, Aleksandr regularly participates in various conservation projects.
His contributions include:
(1) Sponsoring injured lions, elephants, a leopard and a cheetah in the care of TAWA’s Tabora Unit. Aleksandr covers all their sustenance and upkeep costs.
(2) Providing a grant to cover sustenance and upkeep expenses of the new-born female rhino cub of the Eastern Black Rhinoceros species (Diceros bicornis michaeli) at the Rhino sanctuary in the Mkomazi National Park.
(3) Funding the Nature Tanzania project to restore the population of the long-billed tailorbird (Artisornis moreaui). Our participation in this project has two interconnected dimensions:
- Providing a grant to fund the fieldwork of project researchers to design a comprehensive framework for the restoration of this species and monitor its realisation;
- Establishing a sustainable community partnership with local farmers and incentivizing them to adjust their cultivation practices to ensure a favourable habitat for the long-billed tailorbirds. In practice, this meant shifting from growing cinnamon to black pepper, which provides a natural habitat for long-billed tailorbirds. By becoming the largest purchaser of black pepper from the farmers, we ensured that their agricultural activities do not destroy the habitat areas of this species, and that the restoration of their population remains practically feasible.
(4) Supplying six fully-equipped fire-fighting containers at the entry gates of the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park trailheads.
(5) Providing a grant to procure motorcycles to enable fast access of the research areas for the TAWIRI research team for their study of the Kihansi spray toad (Nectophrynoides asperginis)
(6) Providing the TANAPA research teams with GPS-equipped collars to track the annual migratory corridors of the East African Wild dogs (Lycaon pictus lupinus) in the Tarangire to design a comprehensive conservation mechanism for their protection and restoration of the population.
(7) Discovery of the new fish species Ctenochromis scatebra from Cichlids family at the Kikuletwa Hot Springs, and reporting our preliminary findings to the online academic community, which declared that our discovery qualifies as a new species. Peer-reviewed publication of this discovery is being planned.
(8) Providing sizeable recurring donations to eBird, iNaturalist, Xeno-Canto, and similar open databases used by global wildlife researchers and environmentalists in their ongoing work;
Thanks to the conservation agenda championed by Aleksandr Andreichuk, Altezza Travel became the first Tanzania travel company to become an affiliate member of the UN Tourism. This achievement was mentioned by the Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism Angellah Kairuku in her speech at the UN Tourism Regional Conference in Livingstone, Zambia.
Aleksandr Andreichuk is a dedicated environmentalist with research interests that include birdlife and Tanzanian wildlife at large.
