Autobiography

Dr. Claus Thomas is an accomplished microbiologist with a deep specialization in zoonoses, particularly zoonotic bacteriology. He is currently serving as an academician, research fellow, and lecturer at St. Francis University College of Health and Allied Sciences (SFUCHAS) in Tanzania. His extensive academic journey has been supported by prominent research programs such as the ACE II and FWO Flanders, at Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania, and the University of Antwerp, Belgium. With a Ph.D. in Microbiology from both institutions, his research interests are rooted in the intricate dynamics of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance, as evidenced by his numerous peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Claus Thomas’s work primarily focuses on the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases between animals and humans. This research is critical in understanding zoonoses and the challenges posed by antimicrobial resistance. His studies aim to bridge the knowledge gap between animal and human health, addressing the growing concerns of infectious diseases at the human-animal-environment interface. In addition to his research, Dr. Claus Thomas holds a faculty position at SFUCHAS, where he contributes to academic development through teaching, mentorship, and research leadership. As the University College Research Coordinator, he plays a pivotal role in research management, facilitating grant acquisition, and providing academic leadership to staff and students alike. His commitment to fostering research excellence is evident in his mentorship of aspiring scientists, ensuring the continued growth of the next generation of researchers. Dr. Claus Thomas holds several academic qualifications, including a Ph.D. in Microbiology (University of Antwerp, Belgium & Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania - Sandwich Program), an M.Sc. in Applied Microbiology from Sokoine University of Agriculture, and a B.Sc. in Education (Chemistry and Biology) from Mwenge Catholic University. He has also attained various certificates and secondary education qualifications that have laid the foundation for his career in microbiology and education. Dr. Claus Thomas’s professional experience spans a diverse range of roles, from his current position as a lecturer and research coordinator at SFUCHAS to his consulting role with SOLIDAR-MED on health projects. He has also served as a visiting lecturer at Sokoine University of Agriculture, contributed to USAID-Kizazi Kipya’s statistical analysis, and taught biology at The School of St. Jude. His work is underpinned by a commitment to promoting scientific knowledge, improving public health, and advancing education in the field of microbiology.
