Pius Silas Mollel is a young Tanzanian herpetologist and conservationist. After completing his Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Science and Conservation at the University of Dar es Salaam, he participated as a research assistant in the Ukaguru mountains on the Eastern Arc Mountains Endemic Hepertofauna Conservation project. He also participated in the Udzungwa Mountains National Park Herpetological survey as an expert in this group. Through these experiences, he realised that exploring amphibians and reptiles would be his area of interest in wildlife. Pius has contributed significantly to various biodiversity initiatives and projects including biodiversity assessments. His role involved planning and executing biodiversity surveys, applying diverse fauna sampling techniques, and assessing anthropogenic threats to different habitats and ecosystems. Pius also served as a Species Assessment Specialist with the IUCN Tanzania Red List Group, where he conducted comprehensive evaluations of over 30 amphibian species. Pius has enriched his expertise through various training programs, including eDNA sampling, IUCN Red Listing, R programming for biologists, and GIS applications. His strong technical skills encompass advanced QGIS, data analysis, social media content creation, and graphic design. Currently, he is furthering his expertise through a Master’s degree program in Wildlife Ecology at the University of Dar es Salaam and his thesis is on the distribution and breeding ecology of the Ukaguru spiny-throated reed frog. Fluent in both Swahili and English, Pius is committed to advancing conservation efforts through scientific research, community engagement, and innovative environmental solutions. His passion for biodiversity, coupled with his academic and professional accomplishments, positions him as a key contributor to Tanzania's wildlife conservation landscape.
