Autobiography
As a Senior Research Scientist with over a decade of experience in herbal medicine and public health research, my passion for discovery, innovation, and contributing to the advancement of scientific knowledge has been the driving force behind my career.
My research interest is in traditional medicine, natural product development, and diabetes. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working alongside talented interdisciplinary teams and leading various traditional medicine research projects aimed at establishing scientific evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of natural products. My expertise in clinical trials of natural medicine and ethnopharmacology has enabled me to develop a deep understanding of various local traditional medicine products and to design innovative experiments that yield significant insights into their safety and efficacy. One such study involved testing in a randomized controlled trial a standardized extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (Malvaceae) in improving the iron status of adult patients in malaria-endemic that contributed to increased use of this natural product in our local communities.
I have strong communication skills that enable me to communicate complex scientific ideas to diverse audiences, ranging from research colleagues to non-expert stakeholders and media groups. This skill has proven invaluable in securing funding, fostering collaborations, and driving the implementation of research findings into real-world applications.
My leadership role as a Senior Research Scientist has given me the opportunity to be a national coordinator of young East Africa health research scientists (YEARS forum) and currently serving as a Manager of the Traditional Medicine Research Centre of the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), Tanzania. As a research leader, I have mentored and guided junior researchers, ensuring the continued growth of the research community and the success of our projects.
