Autobiography

Dr. Pius Yoram Kavana, Principle Research Officer and Centre Director, TANZANIA WILDLIFE RESEARCH INSTITUTE (TAWIRI), Western Wildlife Research Centre, Kigoma, Tanzania. Dr. Pius Yoram Kavana is a PhD holder obtained at Sokoine University of Agriculture in Tanzania. He has conducted a study on impact of agro-pastoralism on herbaceous plants biodiversity and livelihood of communities in western Serengeti. He also did his Msc in Agriculture in the same University between 1995 and 1997. Dr. Kavana did his BSc in Agriculture at Sokoine University of Agriculture between 1991 and 1994. He joined the Ministry of Agriculture in 1990 after completion of Diploma in Animal Production. He worked in the same Ministry and held different positions from Livestock Field Officer to Principal Research Officer. In 2008 Dr. Kavana joined Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute as a Senior Research Officer where he has been working on evaluation of feed resources for both wildlife and livestock. For the past 30 years Kavana has been actively involved in evaluation of pasture and forage in smallholder farms and rangelands for extensive livestock production and wildlife. He has published 13 papers in peer reviewed journals and 3 book chapters based on research projects that he conducted as a Principal Investigator that include: Use of sugar cane as additive for guinea grass silage making funded by IFS, Feed abundance and diversity for livestock in communities surrounding the Ugalla ecosystem funded by National Fund for Advancement of Science and Technology, Evaluation of grazing pattern and sustainability of rangelands of Mgera Division funded by Tanzania Agricultural Research Project (TARP II), Germplasm collection for improvement and conservation of Pasture species in Eastern zone funded by TARP II, Promotion of cassava technologies in animal feed funded by International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Panorama of agro-pastoralism in western Serengeti and Herbaceous plant species diversity in communal agro-pastoral and conservation areas in western Serengeti, How does agro-pastoralism affect forage and soil properties in western Serengeti, Tanzania?, and Repercussions of Agro-Pastoralism on Soil Condition in Western Serengeti, Tanzania. Dr. Kavana has currently led a team of TAWIRI researchers to evaluate situation of Human-Elephant Conflict in western regions of Tanzania that include Kigoma, Tabora, Katavi and Rukwa. This study made him to develop interest on finding means to alleviate human-elephant conflict to ensure food availability for both human and elephants with minimum interaction between them. Dr. Kavana was involved in six consultant services assessing different livestock commodities production chains that made him capable of utilizing advanced data analysis tools and techniques to extract meaningful insights from large datasets. Translate complex data into actionable recommendations for clients, enabling them to make informed decisions. Recognizing the growing importance of sustainability in today's business landscape, Dr. Kavana is capable of integrating environmental and social aspects into value chain analyses, providing clients with insights on how to align their operations with sustainable practices.
