Autobiography

Dr. Julius D. Keyyu is the Director of Research (since 2006) and Chief Research Officer at the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI). Dr. Keyyu is an expert in ecosystem and population health who holds a PhD in Disease Ecology. Dr. Keyyu among others include conduct, coordinate and wildlife research in Tanzania as well as dissemination of research results for informed decision making. Dr. Keyyu has 29 years of research experience on ecosystem and population health especially wildlife disease ecology. His research work has mainly been on ecological interactions at the human-livestock-wildlife interface using a One health approach on viral, bacterial, parasitic and zoonotic diseases. Dr. Keyyu has worked on a number of zoonotic diseases including rabies, brucellosis, anthrax, Rift Valley Fever (RVF), leptospirosis, Crimean Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF and Q-fever; as well as infectious diseases including Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Peste de Petit Ruminants (PPR) and African Swine Fever. Other areas of research interest include biodiversity conservation, biodiversity and socio-economic surveys, Environmental and Social-Impact Assessment (ESIA), wildlife habitats connectivity especially corridors and population genetics. Dr. Keyyu has attended a number of short courses to advance Professional Research Skills (One health, Emergency Table Top simulation, Capability based planning, Surveillance, Disease investigation, Bioinformatics and Genomics) and Leadership including Public Services and Ethics, Policy Influencing, Corruption and Ethics Infrastructure, Strategic Planning, Research Project Management, and Monitoring and Evaluation Dr. Keyyu has conducted a number of consultancy services especially on Protected Area Management, Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), Biodiversity and Socio-economic Surveys, Project Management, as well as Monitoring and Evaluation of projects. Dr. Keyyu is a member of 23 National, Regional and International Professional Bodies as well as Technical and Steering Committees. Dr. Keyyu is also the focal person for the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) in Tanzania and the focal person for the One health platform in Tanzania. The scientific expertise of Dr. Keyyu has transformed community livelihoods through outreach and technology transfer, and has contributed to scientific knowledge through 80 papers in peer reviewed journals, 71 papers in Conference proceedings, 3 registered patents (two on hair loss prevention/ hair growth promotion and one on skin lightening/wrinkle improvement), 3 book chapters, 15 consultancy services/ special assignments and 27 research grants.
